Exercise for Life
with the compliments of The Barbados
Light & Power Co. Ltd
A piping hot Caribbean sun did not in any way deter the
thousands of Barbadians and visitors alike who flocked to Queens Park in
Bridgetown on Sunday, April 10th for the annual Healthy Lifestyles Extravaganza.
Almost a hundred tents were set up this year, offering helpful hints and advice,
displays and sampling on a range of products and services related to good health
and fitness.
One of the big themes was Exercise as a means of keeping fit
and healthy, and a number of individuals and organizations were on hand to make
sure that everyone was thoroughly entertained and advised on the best way to do
just that.
On stage was a popular team of skipping boxers, Matthew
Roach and Bradley Redman, who gave a scintillating display of power skipping.
The boxers were introduced by the CEO of the Heart Foundation of Barbados’
Adrian Randall, and were there to promote the HFOB’s exercise programme of
Getting Barbados Skipping, coming up in august. Karate was also a featured
event, and the large crowd enjoyed the deft moves of the young performers. Those
wanting to take part in aerobics were welcomed at the Kelloggs Fitness Basics
tent.
In addition to participating or viewing the various fitness
centres, a steady stream took the opportunity to check their blood pressure,
blood sugar and cholesterol levels at the tents sponsored by the Heart
Foundation of Barbados and Spectrol Laboratories. Another popular location
visited was The Doctor in the Park, where prominent physicians answered
questions on health matters. Dr. Colin Alert was on hand on behalf of the HFOB
and gave information and advice to a very attentive audience on matters relating
to heart health. Other organizations present to give advice on health matters
were the Diabetes Association of Barbados and the Barbados Cancer Society, as
well as the Ministry of Health and the AIDS Information Centre.
The Barbados Light & Power Co. Ltd. was also in attendance,
as a good corporate citizen, and the company’s representatives explained their
range of services to households and businesses. The BL & P’s display attracted
considerable attention, and one of the high points of the Extravaganza was a
spectacular demonstration of safety and rescue procedures mounted by the
company.
