A number of cardiac rehab nurses attached to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados (HSFB), are currently benefiting from an educational course, designed to upgrade their skills.

The course, entitled "Getting Started in Cardiac Rehabilitation Nursing, Principles, Process & Practice" has been designed for nurses attached to the Foundation's Cardiovascular Disease Prevention & Rehabilitation Programme (CDP&R), which is carried out at the Foundation's "Gym With A Difference". The Gym carries out special programs for persons who have suffered from heart attacks or strokes, as well as for those who may be at risk of a cardiac event or stroke and those wanting to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

According to Adrian Randall, chief executive officer of the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the educational course which commenced on Tuesday, will run until Thursday this week and will be personally conducted by Pat Comoss from the USA, a nationally recognised speaker, author, educator and practitioner in this specialty field. Included are both classroom instruction and clinical practice in an actual cardiac rehab setting.

"This course is designed to provide a solid practice foundation for those nurses recently hired to work in outpatient cardiac rehabilitation programs. Course content addresses key learning areas and focuses on, knowledge - evidence-based principles & guidelines for patient exercise & education services and skills - practical & efficient methods for implementing the nursing process in this unique outpatient setting" the Foundation has noted.

Stressing that "cardiac rehabilitation is not an entry level nursing position" the Foundation has noted that course participants are registered nurses with a minimum of 2 years experience in some area of cardiac care nursing and have been recently hired into clinical positions, in established outpatient cardiac rehabilitation programs. To assure sufficient time for interactive discussion, as well as adequate opportunity for clinical observation, the class size has been limited to a maximum of 10 nurses. The "Nursing Enrichment Consultants Inc. Educational Course for Rehab Nurses", is approved by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, for nursing contact hours.
