11th March 2010 Trinidad and Tobago Government News - Health
Minister warns: Fatty and salty foods bad for you. Of the CNCDs, heart
disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes are the leading causes of illness and
premature death in the Caribbean today. The picture is similar for Trinidad
and Tobago. CNCDs have been responsible for four of the five leading causes
of death in our country over the last two decades and heart disease,
cancers, diabetes and strokes account for 60% of the total causes of death
in our country.

27th July 2009 - WHAT is causing the delay with the legislation to
ban smoking in public places in Barbados? That is the question being
posed by the Project Officer for Tobacco Control at the Heart and Stroke
Foundation, Wayne Hunte. Hunte expressed disappointment to the Barbados
Advocate that after several promises and even the legislation being drafted,
no concrete position had yet been taken on the matter and he is calling on
the authorities to say what is causing the delay and preventing it from
being presented in Parliament.

Global Initiative To Reduce Tobacco Use -The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados (HSFB), the Heart
Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ) (for The Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control), the
Trinidad & Tobago Cancer Society and the Guyana Chest Society have received a
grant from the Bloomberg Global Initiative to ensure the implementation of
rotating picture-based package warnings on all tobacco products sold in
Caribbean countries. This grant will be administered through the Campaign for
